Synopsis
This choral film, a debut as part of what some already call Québecois New Wave, is one of the most incisive portrait of adolescence which can be seen in the festival circuit. The story focuses on a single long night, during which Émilie’s friends invade her house for a party. Some of the characters have hidden motives, others act casually. The disaster occurs by pure chance, and the subsequent search of responsibilities, headed by the Émilie’s elder brother, is so futile as parental concern or good intentions of most guys. But A l'ouest de Pluton is not a tragedy: the problem is precisely that in the life of these kids nothing is important. Bernadet and Verreault capture perfectly the awkwardness and the isolation of their characters, their attempts to get down from the soft context to land in the hard and concrete floor of maturity... And, of course, fear of success in their business.
