Synopsis
Brian (Paul Dano) sells mattresses and feels paranoid, oppressed, assaulted. Why? By whom? Reality or imagination? He also wants to adopt a daughter, and it has to be a Chinese baby. A slightly or absolutely unconventional girl named Happy (Zooey Deschanel) comes to the store to pick up the very expensive mattress bought by her millionaire father (John Goodman, in an expansive and memorable role). This is what we could call the starting point of the tale's love story. But it could be said that Gigantic is less than that, and, at the same time, much more. It's less because the love story is told on a minor, sometimes inaudible tone. And it's more because in spite of all the extravagance and visual excess in Brian's imagination, Gigantic moves fluidly, with a lot of charm and genuine grace. And it appropriates the mold of "independent New York comedy", expands it and wins back one of the best traditions of American cinema: the construction of incandescent leading characters and lovable supporting roles.
