Synopsis
If anyone thought there was something funny about Mickey Rourke playing a wrestler, then just wait until you see Mamachas del ring. Here, the ones who fight are “mamachas”, Bolivian women of mixed race, of those who sell products on the street and wear big, colorful skirts. Betty M. Park’s fascinating documentary shows them fighting, flying on the ring, and also tells the story of their fighting outside the ring. The unforgettable star of this film, Carmen Rosa, leads the revolution of indigenous women in the world (dominated by men) of Bolivian wrestling: Mamachas del ring shows pioneers in their pioneering struggle, the confrontation with a “villain”, the trips, the problems in the business, the tensions with the family. And as though it weren’t enough with all the blows, the flying kicks, the characters, the fights outside the ring, and the discovery of an unknown universe, at times the film becomes animated in charming and sometimes bloody clay.
